But so much better than even more death and disabling illness. It feels never ending - and so the mind turns to what I am missing - the everyday - the calm wisdom of the ordinary. I tried my hand with Sculpey - polymer clay that fires in a domestic oven so long as you haven't built too big. I guess I could use a kiln... well somehow I had all these wine bottles and I made them into lockdown companions</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXGh4-AT8xFRJn20yITZ8LWE4AjWWkna_HedmYfZ7TcErBh2LzeweUvX9975PoeLsHf6H0XfPA83EgckwTeUctHrjMjyEPH5vrWlXsHISA8BMUTIjhwifcOFfPxyod8ZmohC1ptpUNZKQ/s3567/20211002_141731.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1676" data-original-width="3567" height="301" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXGh4-AT8xFRJn20yITZ8LWE4AjWWkna_HedmYfZ7TcErBh2LzeweUvX9975PoeLsHf6H0XfPA83EgckwTeUctHrjMjyEPH5vrWlXsHISA8BMUTIjhwifcOFfPxyod8ZmohC1ptpUNZKQ/w640-h301/20211002_141731.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>A bit of a crowd to stop me feeling lonely.</p><p>Right to left you can see "Maeve" I'm trying to find wisdom in this? Well good luck with that. Then a piccolo bottle - was that a sparkling white? "Love me Tender" and behind that "Mr. Braun" then poor "Maurice" just clinging to the only comfort left to him. "Wilhelmina" is no nonsense but "Gently" is more compassionate - after the George Harrison song. "Beat" is playing for the extinction rebellion - while we hide is the wild world under attack or fighting back? "I.See.You" - I spent a terrifying night looking at the Burnett Report - and fearing for the calculations that lead us to the knowledge that our actions have consequences - deathly ones. And then "Unity" vertical drinking hah! - whoever heard of it before? Are we divided in our unity or united in our solitude?</p><p>I stopped at nine.</p><p>I've had molds taken off them. The molding process did a bit of damage so the originals can be displayed but not sold... but the bronze! The bewitching bronze! So to honour the past - and something that has been handed down from mother to daughter - I made a stamp for the polymer clay:</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjEvMakpKccJMpzgOt6bbfXouXQx703-jjhYufRaLbhQRJgB7TlEWABoD2RkrOA7P_W3mpZD0zVH7tb0yCQtfLEST0C8RErmAFBvx2gWT3ekzAmtwzkOa2_uHgAdeOePXsii6xvE70SLU/s3024/20211106_164533.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjEvMakpKccJMpzgOt6bbfXouXQx703-jjhYufRaLbhQRJgB7TlEWABoD2RkrOA7P_W3mpZD0zVH7tb0yCQtfLEST0C8RErmAFBvx2gWT3ekzAmtwzkOa2_uHgAdeOePXsii6xvE70SLU/s320/20211106_164533.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The official name for rosemary is<br />Rosmarinus officinalis - dew of the sea.<br />I had no qualms about feminising it.</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcdCWSIlym081sGslElATJT9o1ejNVEP9aUOIlvKn37TnucJJ9Jmc3ZNb5yJ1j5MVoIlA5e5M8Uv46Z_pvvJlUFEXb4SbOp1EbgYI-PCBQQZrItyFQRWX88lAMB-71_72uM86kykbNkJ8/s2630/20211004_143530bg-grey.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1196" data-original-width="2630" height="292" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcdCWSIlym081sGslElATJT9o1ejNVEP9aUOIlvKn37TnucJJ9Jmc3ZNb5yJ1j5MVoIlA5e5M8Uv46Z_pvvJlUFEXb4SbOp1EbgYI-PCBQQZrItyFQRWX88lAMB-71_72uM86kykbNkJ8/w640-h292/20211004_143530bg-grey.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">without the mess and in different relationships</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgN650BstIb0rIdjiJwK176QGJXTs6RCR8_VWfQeSS8v2vGFXQXvcOCUwctFd8ODcs6bozKg7A3iZbqzZ_z14wUkRNCO46f3YxZX-s55qGtTcmM_DMvmpPE66l6kLTN23EZKMS4NmpV8aY/s6332/20211127_112529.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1830" data-original-width="6332" height="184" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgN650BstIb0rIdjiJwK176QGJXTs6RCR8_VWfQeSS8v2vGFXQXvcOCUwctFd8ODcs6bozKg7A3iZbqzZ_z14wUkRNCO46f3YxZX-s55qGtTcmM_DMvmpPE66l6kLTN23EZKMS4NmpV8aY/w640-h184/20211127_112529.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The molding process cost some damage...<br /> I will repair it sometime... but here they are at home</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjBWdGmc07EoSFQnbm3DSzcA3wP2YVPE3bvm9ge4gbKONecBnFdnuaSBvle8l2zlkLvgcedK6AbzCqZB4kBoXmsnuoPRZ4mCWBUT1v83m0RpQbuuazR4zLcgfBBQh6wGEp7LDmorwO_VClrh6cPvl3v4yuipJ12YcAUIa_BM49CcHxGS3Vaa6DBHOmM=s3729" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="867" data-original-width="3729" height="148" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjBWdGmc07EoSFQnbm3DSzcA3wP2YVPE3bvm9ge4gbKONecBnFdnuaSBvle8l2zlkLvgcedK6AbzCqZB4kBoXmsnuoPRZ4mCWBUT1v83m0RpQbuuazR4zLcgfBBQh6wGEp7LDmorwO_VClrh6cPvl3v4yuipJ12YcAUIa_BM49CcHxGS3Vaa6DBHOmM=w640-h148" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">And on show at Herring Island with white and red wine bottles to indicate the process</td></tr></tbody></table><br />Jenny Sculptshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10014703754270749981noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8308592609143860472.post-68947455650059825452021-06-09T09:18:00.005+10:002022-06-02T13:57:18.067+10:00Once more in iso<p> Lockdown mark 4! We got cocky didn't we - thinking that we were on the gradual path to opening up. We thought we could run the Annual and Awards Exhibition with an opening and prizes and everything... and oh dear... well we can count our blessings - I think only one Victorian ended up in ICU and they are recovering now. </p><p>So to pick up the pieces of the exhibition - <a href="https://sculptorsvictoria.asn.au/virtual-exhibition/2021-annual-awards-exhibition" target="_blank">it's online</a> - only the People's Choice Award is on offer - and we can run it again next October because our lovely hosts have found us a time slot.</p><p>I gave <a href="https://sculptorsvictoria.asn.au/virtual-exhibition/view/2021-annual-awards-exhibition/contemplating-the-finite/44" target="_blank">Contemplating the Finite</a> another run... why not? It would have looked great at the Victorian Artists Society. That link won't work after the online show closes.... but if anyone wants to boost my People's Choice Vote... knock yourself out... In the meantime - stay safe - we aren't out of the woods yet.</p><p><br /></p>

<br />
Hopefully there will be an online exhibition. It will be hard putting that together since sculpture is a matter of real presence.<br />

It's been a bit tricky getting work done lately - car out of action in the airbag saga and not going to be replaced because my dear little Honda is 22 years old... but irreplaceable... I suppose I'll be managing with car share for a while - I'm just nervous of that too while the 'rona is about.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So wash hands everyone - we'll get an online exhibition going and put on a better show on the other side of this world changing crisis.<br />

"Meander" went into the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show. No sale and no prize but it looked pretty well there.<br />

Lucky for me - and a pretty impressive compliment the work sold later to one of my suppliers... it's gone to a very loving home. Wow!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So on with the show fortified by that bit of confidence raising I worked on the inspiration of <a href="https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/45090/sonnet-29-when-in-disgrace-with-fortune-and-mens-eyes" target="_blank">Shakespeare's Sonnet 29</a>... and thought of the emotional lift at dawn when the birds go up all together.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The process was prolonged... finding the form and then figuring how to make it... and then transporting the wax in its frame hanging by bits of jute string to the foundry.... <a href="http://malwood.com.au/" target="_blank">Mal Wood</a> is not only skilful but extremely courageous!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And so the work was exhibited at the Association of Sculptors of Victoria Annual and Awards Exhibition - to prize winning acclaim! An honour! Lucky me!</div>

Herring Island in the middle of the Yarra River is a great place - it appears to be natural bush but the Friends of Herring Island will tell you the long and arduous battle they have had to get things to grow. But it's coming up a treat as pioneer natives give way to something closer to a community. The <a href="https://sculptorsvictoria.asn.au/" target="_blank">Association of Sculptors of Victoria</a> runs a show as part of the <a href="http://www.herringislandfestival.org.au/" target="_blank">Herring Island Summer Arts Festival</a> - in 2019 from 12 January to 3 February.<br />
So I put two works in:<br />
"Sun and Moon" and a new one "Meander"<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<br />
"Meander" is a continuation of the bronze and glass story - and the subject - maybe a lament for the Darling River - was intended to find an echo of sunlight through water and the re-wilding of rivers.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Casting the glass pieces provided its own adventure... it's been a while since I built a mold and one ruptured - the mess is still in the bottom of the kiln - but the next firing with both sun and moon in the kiln together gave me the results. And thanks to James Thompson of Blackwood Crystal for coming up with the right colours... the adventure never stops...<br />

So what is the work about? A bit of nature worship? The fire of creation and the water cycle? To me it is a mini cosmos - the pull of the sun and moon driving the water cycle and linking growth and maybe beauty. Hopefully it will speak to different people in different ways - there is no one perfect art form and no one perfect idea of being. Just this is the way I'm working at the moment.<br />
<br />
The work is at <a href="http://qdosarts.com/" target="_blank">Qdos Gallery</a> until the end of October... then - who knows..<br />

Stage one was the experiment: to see if bronze woven wire can be used to support a wax sculpture for a lost wax casting.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">the wax - on bronze woven wire</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>

That was tricky - the micro crystalline wax I used was too soft... so the work was floppy and had to be cut into multiple pieces - a total learning experience - but now I'm on the journey and can make more complex pieces... I hope.<br />
<br />

There was some holding of breath and then mad exultation when Mal and his team showed me the casting - it danced - it lives!<br />
<br />
Then to find a base to present the work - much thanks to Andrew!<br />

<br />
And finally the pear.... it's been a while since I cast work in the kiln... now I can get a reading on how my power consumption goes: <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Two molds went into the kiln on the Saturday afternoon.... I tried to pick the time when there wouldn't be a "curb your power" moment... just made it!<br />

My neighbour Anna was walking in the park when the arborists were removing a tree<br />
<br />
There was a significant crack so the tree had to go. We would have carved the three meter stump that was left but before that happened the tree was chipped - nothing left but a pile of wood chips.<br />
<br />
Fortunately Anna rescued some rounds of the trunk and they duly arrived in my driveway.<br />

The work I built was a response to the <a href="http://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-usa-trump-inauguration-britain-idUKKBN1540VG" target="_blank">Build Bridges Not Walls</a> campaign. Being my first serious effort with a chainsaw the work proceeded carefully and slowly - with many a call to gurus, chainsaw shops and sculptor friends.<br />

I also made a sample piece - a tribute to the tree that never turned into sculpture and a gift for Anna.<br />

Finally the work was ready and sent to the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show<br />

Back in 2011 I undertook some work to represent followers of Zarathustra at the <a href="http://www.mwr.org.tw/index_en.aspx" target="_blank">Museum of World Religions in Taiwan</a>. It was a remarkable learning experience during which I learned a lot and attempted to use new techniques to get a museum durable item from lightweight materials - all the while imitating the original sandstone sculpture of ca 530BCE.<br />
<br />
Amongst the work was a Fravashi which was made in glass - designed to be seen through the glass rather than modelled from glass. The first casting didn't result in a clear face - so a second was made to send to Taiwan. The original is now on its return journey from the Canberra Glassworks after expert polishing.<br />

<br />
This year I was commissioned to make another Fravashi - to provide the backdrop for a Navjote ceremony. The work is 2.4m long so it took up the whole available space in the studio. And because of the nature of the work it was made in paper clay/papier mache - another experiment with materials. In many ways this gave a better result than the coated work - and it's protected by some acrylic paint - many coats.<br />

I put a bronze casting into the Annual Exhibition - a maquette because I wasn't brave enough to go for a metre high work before resolving the form. It took a bit of effort to make it look as though I'd just thrown it together.<br />

And then to the question of the presentation of art - or the presentation of food.... and so I made "Deconstruct" which would be a pleasant enough piece of Manchurian pear wood - so how do you like it served?<br />

Having the loan of a chainsaw made roughing out a new stand for the bronze "For Sheena" that much faster - it also produced some nice cut pieces... so there's fun to be had seeing what is in those interesting shapes.<br />

Today the new stand - "Petal for Sheena" is at <a href="http://eepurl.com/bKSf8z" target="_blank">Herring Island</a> and I'm off to the opening! It looks like perfect weather. See you there.<br />

Here are some cliches: "cheap and nasty", "quick and dirty" ... telling me that if you seek low price and instant gratification without regard to quality you may well be left unsatisfied. And you can't have it for nothing. <br />
<a name='more'></a>I take my <a href="https://youtu.be/6sqnptxlCcw" target="_blank">washing machine</a> for granted: it washes clothes and doesn't electrocute me. Pretty cool really. Behind that statement is lots of infrastructure built with safety and reliability in mind. Just because it's relatively cheap now doesn't mean the investment over time wasn't serious.<br />
<br />
So why are we suggesting that there is a "moral case" for cheap (and nasty) electricity in countries where millions currently don't have electricity to their homes? Or maybe not even a settled home? It's a big job - it will take planning and preparation, evaluation of the whole situation and the use of appropriate technology to bring energy equity to the world - and keep it clean!Jenny Sculptshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10014703754270749981noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8308592609143860472.post-71538296652303458322015-05-12T13:50:00.000+10:002015-05-15T09:35:24.802+10:00Breakfast is .... the first meal of another day<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

My parents separated and divorced quite bitterly as was the way in the sixties... then they didn't speak to one another for fifty something years. And now they've died within months of each other. Hard enough to reconcile two distant parts of my identity while they lived, to love two people so different, to ignore that icy barrier between.... and now to cope with sorrow of <a href="http://www.jewishfunerals.org.au/funeral/988/simon/john" target="_blank">parting</a>.<br />

The foyer of 120 Collins Street is an awe inspiring spot - the ceiling is very high and there is a skylight way above. The 105 odd works fill the place reasonably well - and my three are in there. I've got two works from previous Herring Island shows and one new one.<br />

<br />
After that the new one - a piece in wire and plaster coated with polyurethane by Austuf and then painted... and that was fun! Here's the background for <i>The Pelagic Creation</i>:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>In the beginning, Eurynome's movement southwards caused the North wind
to spring up behind her. She turned and thought this looked interesting
and rubbed it between her hands. So was the serpent Ophion formed. They
danced and coupled, then Eurynome became a dove and brooded their egg on
the waters. From this egg all living things were born. Précis from
Robert Graves Greek Myths. The work is painted in homage to black opal –
a distillation of the primordial sea. It would cost five times as much
if cast in metal.</i></blockquote>

It will take a little longer to get all the data entered on the <a href="http://sculptorsvictoria.asn.au/" target="_blank">ASV website</a>... still glitches in the system for entering prize winners - but it's getting there.... wish us all luck.Jenny Sculptshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10014703754270749981noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8308592609143860472.post-60491296243390611942014-05-18T19:39:00.000+10:002014-05-18T19:39:50.402+10:00If .... there couldn't be a warIf all the soldiers refused to fight there couldn't be a war.... Such was the philosophy when I was a student in the late 60's and early 70's. I was studying architecture and certainly believed then that my chosen career could help build a better world. We all did - and cheerfully took on waiter-ing cleaning, bartending or whatever to keep ourselves fed and independent. We were also conscientious objectors to military service since we didn't see that as part of a better world. That's clearly an oversimplification when you look at the good our armed forces have done in disaster relief. <div>
These days it's pretty hard to get anyone to believe that we were motivated by an altruistic dream. Where has that world gone? I feel so heartbroken and despairing. As an "economic unit" my life is a failure - l could do so much more but it is not wanted... where is the world that is enriched by beauty, that builds compassion from the expression of love and humanity?<br /></div>

So here is the day in the life of a rock - albeit one that I messed with a bit.<br />

It depends on perception, communication, transparency and community values. I suspect though that it will be a pretty good indicator of the future viability of a company. I've done my rant about the ills of <a href="http://www.sculptorsbootlace.com.au/2011/05/grand-unified-theory-of-economics.html" target="_blank">decoupling money</a> from the goods and services it represents; now I'm thinking that a method of assessing and recording the social license might be as important as the current accounting of a company when due diligence is done.<br />
<br />
A system of assessment would need to be agile and flexible to allow for lots of different situations and technologies, and would need to be able to cross national borders. It needs to be community based and not an arm of a multinational company. In other words it needs to be crowd sourced and used. And verified - no one wants a good company ruined by false information or misrepresentation.<br />
<br />
Should an individual self assess? What is my long term philosophy?<br />

And where do I stand? A long way behind my own standards: this little item in cast glass doesn't just have glass manufacture and a kiln firing - there's a pile of waste mould material I have to answer for - how can that be re-used or recycled? I should get back to carving wood!<br />
